I joined this morning to get a little ahead of the curve.

There zero reason this place couldn’t replace Reddit entirely if people just give it a chance.

I really hope people don’t just drop it once done the blackouts end.

I’m a fairly active and experienced shitposter content creator on Reddit who will fully shift towards sole posting here (well, at Lemmy in general, across different “branches”) if things don’t improve there. Which, sad to say, looks increasingly unlikely.

It probably won’t get as many upvotes, but that’s fine. Artists continue drawing even if their works don’t get much public appreciation, simply because they enjoy creating, and other creatives (e.g. meme-makers) like me are no different - upboats and engagement in the comments are nice, but most of the joy comes from seeing the final product just as one envisioned it in their mind. Of course, if it brings others joy, that’s a bonus.

Get enough of these people migrating over, and you have a small critical mass that will create sufficient content for lurkers to look and go “Hey, that’s something I wanna be part of.” Then “not being on there/in the know” becomes stranger than “being on there”, and… the Lemmy servers will probably buckle under the influx. Heh.

It has potential but the learning curve is starting to be a real drag for me. I’m confused by this setup in general and don’t particularly feel like getting a phd in lemmying just to shitpost, you know?

I just don’t understand all these ‘instances’ or whatever. Do you need a separate login/pw for all of them? I tried registering for beehaw for example but it just sits there spinning its wheels whenever i hit submit. Idk I’ll give it a chance I guess but I’m pretty underwhelmed so far. I just don’t understand why a forum to shitpost needs to be so complicated…

You do not need a separate login per instance. You can make one login on one instance and communicate with all the others as long as the instance you are trying to communicate with is not banned by your instance. I can give further clarification upon request.

Think of it like an email address. Your Lemmy “instance” selection would kind of be similar to choosing to create an account on GMail. Even if your account is on GMail, you can still send mails to people on Outlook, icloud, and anything else, no matter which server you chose. Lemmy works similarly in a way: No matter where you created your account, you can interact with all instances. So I have an account on lemmy.world, but I’m commenting on your comment (you’re on lemmy.one), while our conversation takes place on lemmy.ml. And it should just work

Please let me know what areas you are struggling with and I’ll do my best to explain. I think the difficulty of Lemmy is being exaggerated and maybe if things are explained succinctly it will help the community tremendously. I will try my best.

Reddit has sucked since about 2016. I really hope most of Reddit stays on Reddit, and Lemmy can just be under the radar like Reddit circa 2012.
