Same. I’ve stopped with Reddit since I’ve never posted there with my real name. No one knew me personally, and I didnt know anyone personally, so my switch to kbin was easy.
My real-life family and friends use Discord, Instagram, Messenger, Twitter, Viber, and WhatsApp, so I’ll continue to at least have accounts on those.
Part of the beauty and awe I get whenever I reread that famous excerpt from Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot is the sense of how ephemeral and delicate our existence, and even the very human concept of “existence”, is. We are infinitesimally small and yet, through no fault of our own, our days, how we fill them, and the people we know hold some measure of importance to us. And it will all be gone - eventually. It’s a very somber note yet it makes me feel a certain sense of peace.
“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. c/memes aside, I remember starting my own webforum on InvisionFree in 2006. Place was a barren wasteland, but in fairness it was for a very specific niche game at the time (Armored Core) and the target market was also tiny (players in the Philippines). Lo and behold, one by one people came. 17 years and a lot of host and software migrations later, that forum is still standing.
If you build it, they will come. Eventually.
On one hand I’m glad the blackouts made a noticeable dent and moved reddit (the site) into a response of some sort.
On the other hand, reddit (the site) is not going to back down because they already revealed their hand and they’re motivated by $$$ which is a strong-ass motivator.
On the third hand, the majority of reddit (the users) are back and still using it, which proves that reddit (the site) was correct in staying on their course. Those users now have a negative outlook on both the corporate leadership AND the mods that run the subreddits, yet they still log in, contributing to the wealth of discussion and information stored in that place.
I am whelmed.
In the Philippines, it’s Juan and Maria dela Cruz, although those have fallen out of use due to the popularity of Western (aka US) culture. Interesting reading about every country’s own names for their everyman.
