  • I’m waiting for my ban because they’ve been handing out some bans for “calls for violence” when people have talked about wishing there was more Luigi’s (in stronger language than this). Though depends on the mod.

Lemmy.ml probably isn’t my vibe either though, because while I’m way more favourable than the average person in the US or Australia towards China, and while I don’t think everyone on Lemmy.ml is a tankie, there is some serious rose tinted glasses being worn by some folk simply because the USSR and China have carried the communist banner.

Ridiculous, given how terribly inequitable Chinese society is. And how they’re not exactly models for others to follow. They’re in practically the same boat as us now, in this capitalist hellscape. In my case, I’d argue Australia has achieved more socialism than China has (thanks to the union movement, though, that’s waning these days…)

I’ll probably still move to Lemmy.ml at some point, if and when I’m banned on world 😅 just hope me calling people out when they’re engaging in “USA bad therefore China and Russia good” stupidity doesn’t get me banned.

I’ve viewed modlogs from lemmy.ml before, getting banned for being a reactionary is some wild shit. If not having a hard-on just because something claims to be socialist is being a reactionary, then damn

  • Yes, American propaganda is propaganda, but also: They’re both hugely powerful countries. It’s a bit naive to view either without healthy scepticism.

Just my perspective from a smaller country. I wish we weren’t the US’ little bitch (Australia) and think I do view China quite a lot more favourably than the average US or Australian citizen, but I think the first sentence in your meme is the healthy view here with practically any country.

  • I’ve tried to imagine how I would gesture ‘my heart goes out to you’ vibes. In no world can I imagine a down-turned, flat palm, fingers straight and all together at about 45° (Nazi salute).

Like, if you were to give some one something (your metaphorical heart) you’d hand it over palm up. Or if you’re metaphorically distributing it like sewing seeds you would again, throw it out, palm up, hands slightly closed. Or if you’re throwing it like sand, you would have your fingers apart by the end of the throw.

In no world, does this make any sense other being a Nazi salute.

Or he’s the most awkward, weird dude in history. That is also, true, but given his other behaviour, I dunno how this could be read in any other way.

Despite the unhappy circumstances, it’s kinda nice Chinese and Americans interacting on social media.

The fact this isn’t typically possible because of bans in China is not so nice. Neither is the fact the US is going down the same road instead of proper privacy laws.

    But still, kinda nice

I actually think these are fine. If I can quickly recognise each on my homescreen (I don’t use labels) then it’s fine, and I’ve never had a problem with any of these.

I like it because each company each has its own set of apps, and they have somewhat unified app icons.

Proton is the same, which similar icons as google but with their own unified branding.

    I like it, personally.

  • The drawbacks are many and the benefits are few.

Watching foreign films would be a pain, where is this in the world again, what does 19:00 mean for them? More exposition, or you just have to guess based on languag and accent.

I need this work done by our team in XYZ country, what are their working hours? (wow, look at that, still using timezones?)

When you arrive somewhere on holiday, now you have to get a sense of the time there. Or continually be thinking “what’s that in my home time?/what’s that in solar time”, which is why solar time just makes more sense.

People aren’t going to stop thinking in solar time, ever. We’re hard-wired to be awake with the sun. It doesn’t matter what the numbers are, you will associate them with the sun. The question then becomes, would we rather all use roughly the same numbers (timezones, what we currently have), or different numbers (everyone using UTC).

Using UTC solves only 1 problem, you can say verbally to someone across the world, let’s make the meeting 15:00 - but this is already easily solved by using a calendar which converts for you…

There’s a reason we have never used a single non-solar time, it’s just worse and I think there’s a reason these posts always end up on programmer focused places on the internet. Yes, I’m sure their job is annoying, and it would be easier to not have to solve time conversion problems, but the time conversion problems wouldn’t even go away if you forced everyone to use UTC. You’d just start having to do conversions to solar time, or looking up waking hours (which is just timezones)

    This is a solved problem.

Problems caught early are much easier to fix than problems caught later. This applies to any project (I’m not a programmer, but an engineer in the traditional sense).

Just “doing it” without coordination and review is a great way to waste a bunch of effort down the line with re-work.

    Edit: typo

  • Physiotherapists use a form of acupuncture called dry needling, which can be used to trigger muscle twitching/relaxation (I’m not really super knowledgeable on it, I’ve just been to the physio, who use this in combination with massage, specific exercises etc)

    It’s certainly not placebo

As for all the other claims made, I dunno.

Thank you. This is such a breath of fresh air. In all cases I prefer a simple answer, when organising an event with multiple people where I want to get ideas on numbers for planning.

    • Yes - great! See you there

    • No (with or without a reason) - fantastic! We’ve all got our own stuff going on or reasons why we don’t want to go!

    • Maybe, with a reason why, or when you would be able to give an answer - cool!

    • Maybe, with no further explanation - ugh. I’ll just assume you’re not coming and don’t care.

Maybe with no explanation is the cowards way out. Especially when “no sorry, I’m busy!” is the standard white lie.

“No because I don’t want to (don’t feel socially up to it)” is the hero’s response and I salute you 🫡
