In-spite of its potential for liberation and independence.
When it shows that potential, maybe more people will get on board. Until then there are a host of problems that make a ton of people not want to touch it including but not limited to:
Capitalists and scammers are already exploiting it the way they do with traditional currencies, except in sometimes new creative ways because of either the lack of regulations or because the technology inherently makes it impossible to trace.
I don’t see the involvement of predatory capitalists or financial institutions changing in a fully crypto world either, because people are always going to need financial services like loans and insurance on their savings and the financial institutions will always have the imbalance of power.
The currencies mostly benefit people with a ton of capital to handle consensus, which further entrenches the power imbalance found in (1) and (2).
Insane amounts of resources are needed to reach consensus in a way that is not good at all for the environment, whether that be electricity, computer hardware, or whatever other resource. Sure we already use a lot of power to make our society run. But crypto is asking for more ON TOP of that, compounding the issues. Saying the financial industry already uses a lot of power is not a good argument when I don’t think anyone is reasonably convinced that they’re going away even after crypto were to take over, and now you’re adding an insane power or pollution requirement to run the world’s currency system.
Relying solely on crypto leaves people destitute if their wallets got hacked, unless they decide to utilize traditional banking with insurance (hint: people like stability and a lot of people will choose to do this over having their life savings wiped out).
Chucklefucks are using the technology to commodify and break the best part of the digital world which is the ability to have bit for bit reproducible copies of information.
I’m serious. Fix all of that and you absolutely would get people on board. Not even kidding. Crypto would be taken seriously. But I have yet to hear compelling solutions by cryptobros.
Haida Gwaii taking up the entire coast and interior yet isn’t even in the map gave me a chuckle.
How often are you dudes changing SIMs? I only ever do it when I get a new phone, and they always come with one.
Chris Jericho has never been happier
Even knowing this, I’m still both in awe and jealous of talented people. Some people I know who can practice so much that they become exceptional at something seem to be immune to burnout on their passions for long periods of time, or seem to have a brain chemistry that remains resilient in the face of it, and that ain’t me. I’ve suspected I have ADHD but it’s hard to get a diagnosis and my doctor said he’s hesitant to diagnose his patients even though he thinks it’s possible (and I’m in Canada where I’m lucky to even have an assigned family doctor so I can’t really get a good second opinion on that). Programming just happens to be one of the few things that I get burned out on the least compared to everything else and even then it’s hard to sustain interest in it for long periods.
I kind of don’t want Linux to become mainstream tbh because then corporate enshittification becomes a much more real threat.
I would give everyone noclip mode.
Convenient because you can fly anywhere and through walls. People’s commutes would be so much shorter! You could visit any country you wanted without even needing planes. Everyone would experience an unprecedented level of freedom.
Inconvenient because of the messy implications of getting stuck in walls if you turned it off at the wrong time. Also people would probably just be able to take anything they wanted without repurcussions so the world might devolve into chaos. You wouldn’t really be able to jail anyone. Security and privacy would be hard to come by.

True although in Canada we tend to refer to the colleges in collegiate universities as faculties, and so the word college remains dedicated to the separate kind of post secondary institution the other dude described.
I mean you could certainly have both but Linux treating its terminal as a first class interface is a big killer feature of Unix/Linux I think and why it’s still used in the server/dev world so much. Having a command line interface that’s not an afterthought, fully scriptable, and can be automated is very convenient for large tasks that need to be chained together whereas on Windows you have things like PowerShell where not every program you want to do things with in PowerShell has a way to interact with PowerShell, since in Windows you have the opposite problem of GUI being the only first class interface. I think I’d be worried that if you de-emphasized the terminal more you’d get the weird situation that happened to Windows and PowerShell whereas it’s usually not super hard to build your own GUI around an open source terminal program. A lot of people aren’t especially motivated to do that so some programs don’t have GUIs, but if you’re feeling like more programs need one then go for it.
