I guess that’s one perspective. Another one might be that their marriage wasn’t as great as they thought it was in the first place.
Kids are stressful, no argument there. But blaming kids because their marriage buckled under the added stress just feels like an easy excuse. I suspect there were deeper issues that those people weren’t particularly interested in exploring.

I think you touched on how to make pay it forward work: make it as low effort as possible.
In this case, while you had lots of work, the people “paying it forward” had almost none. Thus the chain was able to go for as long as you were willing.

For me I got so immersed in the world and character that it didn’t even occur to me to save scum. This RPG is so good that I actually felt like I was living the story. The only game that ever managed to accomplish that.
I wouldn’t recommend talking to your cat about Satanism. The best bet is to just hope they never find out about it.

Maybe try travel? Bring your laptop / deck / switch so you can game on the road. But do it from some place new. If you can work from home, maybe try moving around on short term rentals. Doesn’t need to be anything exotic, could be the next town over.
Anything to break up your routine a bit. Don’t look at it as a means to an end. Try and enjoy the journey itself

Same reason most non technical people using Linux today do so on the Steam Deck. If you want to spread Linux, trying to convince individuals is going about it all wrong.
You need to convince Canonical or Red Hat to spend more on partnerships with manufacturers. I’m not sure if anyone else has deep enough pockets.
Ignoring lint issues comes to mind as an at least somewhat reasonable use case.
