alcohol is physiologically worse than nicotine, but not nearly as instantly addictive.

i’ve watched people with much stronger mental fortitude than i try to quit nicotine and fail spectacularly. i don’t know any smokers who aren’t addicted.

nicotine scares the hell out of me because i do not want to be a slave to it

it’s wild to me how willingly people will give themselves over to nicotine addiction

i blame our nonsensical drug laws that rank cannabis and psilocybin mushrooms as “worse” than nicotine and alcohol, even though the latter two are more harmful and much more addictive

i love me some cannabis, i’ll have the occasional mushroom, and i even enjoy a glass of whiskey every now and then, but nicotine scares the absolute hell out of me

Critics didn’t necessarily go to film school, but they see everything under the sun, so when a movie doesn’t do anything particularly new or is highly derivative without adding its own twist, it bores them. The person who goes to 3-5 movies a year doesn’t care, to them something derivative of 10 movies they haven’t seen is still new and fresh. This is in addition to the technical competency component you mentioned.

I watch a ton of movies so my tastes are more likely to align with those of a professional critic.

  • because that isn’t really how these things work. It doesn’t matter how secure your operating system is, it can still get infected with malware if you let the user download and install arbitrary software. every modern desktop operating system that allows this has this hole.

features that pop up warnings when running code not signed by the OS vendor (like Windows SmartScreen or macOS Gatekeeper) help to an extent, but are not magic bullets since users can still override them.

at the end of the day, the best defense is to make sure you actually trust any software you download before running it.

  • most windows programs haven’t run as root in over a decade.

a program only runs as “root” in one of three situations:

    1. The app manifest says it is a requirement.
    2. The executable does not have an app manifest and has the “Run as Administrator” compatibility flag (only applies to apps built for XP or older).
    3. The user manually invokes the program with super user permissions (right click and “Run as Administrator", or manually set the above compatibility flag).

We’ve also gone from people needing to be independently wealthy to even think about creating great music to just needing a cheap computer. Music hasn’t gotten lazier, the barrier to entry has just gotten lower meaning there is a lot more being made across the quality spectrum.

i don’t know anybody who has gotten married or fought in a war before the age of 18. we don’t even let people drink or smoke until 21.

history is with me on this one.

you seem like the kind of person who is OK with saying only white men should be allowed to own land or vote
