If you’re comparing stock Android against stock iOS, Apple has more privacy protections against tracking because of App Tracking Transparency.

I have two phones as daily drivers, one Android and one iPhone. Compared to Android, the iPhone is very restrictive and locked down. Adblockers don’t work and you’re forced to use whatever iOS interface it throws at you. Buttons and gestures move around with every update. There’s no way to view and manage internal files, no sideloading, lots of options that are just not accessible to normal users.

The positive side is that iPhones are very optimized and I can get similar performance to my Android phone despite the iPhone being older and having worse specs. The closed ecosystem also has its benefits, because it makes data very hard to get out, so I use the iPhone as a device to sandbox all the Meta crap that I’m forced to use.

Are they going to keep the lawsuit focused on OpenAI and Meta or turn it into yet another lawsuit against piracy?

Hate speech laws in real life are also very ambiguous and rarely stand alone in court without another more easily proven charge.

I didn’t bother to check who it is because I’m not petty enough, but there’s a guy on my instance who downvotes everything. I think some people are using downvotes to “hide read posts” as voting counts as reading a post.

This one is probably either small enough to fly under Disney’s radar or has already been shut down. Disney successfully copyrighted one Club Penguin revival project for using the art assets and logo, even though the code was completely rewritten. Maybe this is the one?

There is either no chance of that getting off the ground or the project you are talking about has already shut down. The Club Penguin IP is owned by Disney who aggressively copystrikes Club Penguin revivals.

I don’t use Reddit for the interaction, average Redditors are annoying to interact with. Reddit’s value to me is the amount of information it contains. It’s supposed to be like copy pasting a book that has DRM, so you can make use of the content without worrying that the book’s copyright holder will use it to screw you over eventually.

Don’t worry about it spamming instances. This bot posts so much that it will be automatically blocked from any instance that uses the default Lemmy rate limits, so all bot deployments will have to run on an instance that is specifically for them.

Source code for the bot will be released on July 1st if Reddit doesn’t introduce a breaking change on that day and if I don’t receive a good argument as to why this bot will destroy the Fediverse.

It will continue to work if you’re the only user on your Teddit instance. Teddit (and Libreddit, and any of the Reddit alternative frontends) use the Reddit API un-authenticated and after July 1st, they will be rate-limited to 10 requests per minute. The limit is enough for the activity of one logged-out user but it will break the proxy instances that allow many users to combine their traffic under one IP.

I don’t think the legal protections will be effective to prevent AIs from being trained on your works, because the data sets used to train the models are scraped from art sharing websites and it won’t be possible to identify that your art was part of the training set, legally or not. A better way is to use a tool like Glaze, which modifies your artwork so it looks the same to a human viewer but introduces errors when fed to an AI model.

The Fediverse already has these, there are lots of echo chamber instances that automatically block other instances for simply federating with the “wrong” instance (equivalent to those AutoMod bans on Reddit for posting in a certain subreddit). Since instance admins pay for their instances out of pocket, they are more restrictive with their instance’s allowed content than social media websites that want to cast the widest net. Eventually, there will be a massive split between communities, like how conservative and progressive Mastodon instances all block each other. Centrists can just have an account on each side of the wall.

The karma system on Reddit is tied to a lot of things so it’s understandable for them to care about it. If an account has low karma, they’re more likely to be shadowbanned or suspended. Even when not shadowbanned, their posts and comments will need manual mod approval to be shown to other users.

That, and for Lemmy specifically, its history of being a tankie forum. Without the Reddit refugee migration, if you joined Lemmy as a single user, you would be alone among communists and eventually get bullied into leaving. Already in 2020-2021, Fediverse users knew about Lemmy, but they avoided promoting it because of its userbase. This Reddit situation provided the push to get many normal users over to Lemmy at once to drown out the communist users.

A lot of VPS providers block port 25 (and other email ports) because they don’t want people to set up bot spam mail servers on their services. Could that be the issue?

The art sharing subreddits like Imaginary Network, /r/awwnime, /r/patchuu, /r/moescape and similar. I want to start an instance that automatically crossposts from those subreddits to the Fediverse, and users here can also contribute with artwork that fits the community’s theme. It’ll probably fetch the posts through RSS to avoid the API limits, but who knows if Reddit might shut that down too. So I’ll have to wait until this API situation stabilizes.

Given the number of bots on the internet trying to crack captchas, this is already happening. I don’t think captchas are being used for AI training that much, since hCaptcha uses AI-generated images with prompts like “Select the images with a hamster eating a watermelon” for its tests. All of the reCaptcha road captchas I receive also have answer validation and won’t let me pass if I answer incorrectly because of a misclick.

When you’re in power, the fascists are the “morons with a pulse” who don’t get guns, but when they’re in power, YOU’RE the moron with a pulse who loses your ability to defend yourself. The point is to remove the ability of the authorities to decide who gets the right to own weapons, because it can easily be turned against you. Besides, morons obtain weapons illegally all the time. Firearms ownership is illegal in my country (except for licensed use like hunting) but we still have problems with gun violence because of weapons trafficking.
