firefox and google chrome nowadays use very similar amounts of resources. However, firefox is (for now) less cringe than google chrome.
Actually, I haven’t gotten around to trying Wayland yet! Mostly because i3 on X11 works well enough for me already.
I mean, I literally just plugged in my monitor, then went into Arandr and dragged the funny rectangles a little.
Edit: For reference, my multi-monitor setup is literally just 2 monitors side by side. In my case, I did have to change some settings, specifically set the left one as primary rather than the right one, and make them tile in a slightly different way. But I wouldn’t say it involved any “jank” — just some configuration, same as it would on any other OS. (Specifically, I dual-boot windows 10 for some rather silly reasons, and I found the multi-monitor configuration process very comparable in terms of jank or complexity.)
I’m not sure what your experience has been like, but for me it’s been basically plug-and-play.
Meh, they just end up making it a series of posts / videos. If someone’s risking their life by doing shit like going into an active warzone and using social media to keep the public informed of what’s going on, doesn’t that probably count as “real” journalism, regardless of what online platform they upload to?

fair enough. that’s pretty dope ngl
Yeah, exactly. Literally a “false dichotomy” moment.

hmm, that’s a fair point. I have heard things about independent journalists making use of platforms like Twitter and Tiktok. I wonder if independent journalists have begun to adopt Mastodon as well, or just decentralized social networks in general, to share their news.

No, the correct answer is “fuck both of them”. You don’t need Twitter, you definitely don’t need Threads.
You don’t even need Mastodon for that matter. You don’t need a constant drip feed of dopamine. If you need to stay informed, you can just use news sites or something.

trying to finally beat that one roguelite…
I mean, as soon as Threads starts federating, Meta will be pulling shit-tons of data from those instances. I guess it’s all publically available anyhow? But federation will definitely be handing it to them on a silver platter.
The real concern is that federating with Threads might create network effects that pull Fediverse users more and more into just using Threads, so that when it inevitably stops federating those users will essentially have been poached into yet another Facebook walled garden.
Another concern I’ve seen mentioned is, a lot of instances have rules against advertising. Threads exists explicitly to make money off advertising (and selling users’ data). That’s a conflict of interest that all but guarantees eventual rule violations.
And finally, Facebook is just a garbage corporation. They’ve gotten away with a lot of shit. If I ran my own instance, I’d sure as shit defederate from them.
