Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I need some advice. Tomorrow at 16:00 I need to pee into a cup at the doctor’s office for a drug test and I am a very shy pee-er. Should I hold my morning pee from 8:00 to 16:00 to make sure I have enough of it or should I pee as soon as I wake up and drink water throughout the day and hope I have enough? Thank you all.

Definitely don’t do the first option, it’s important to not have a too full bladder for too long, and to go to the bathroom regularly. Best option would be to start hydrating today, and continue to hydrate well into tomorrow. The goal should be to have a light yellow urine colour. If you are concerned about not being able to pee during the moment, drink a small water bottle (375 mL or approximately 13 US fluid ounces) a hour before you need to give the sample, and you should be good to go.

I’ve never had someone watch me pee at a doctor’s office for a drug test. They put you in a bathroom with some special chemical dye in the water and tell you that you cannot flush or it voids the test. They also provide water. If you are concerned, I would drink 45 minutes and 30 minutes ahead about 2 cups of water each time. Then when you get there you should be fine.

In addition to hydration, breathing will help. Take a deep breath in then just keep breathing out. All the way out. Near the bottom of your breath you should find it easier to pee. It’s a nifty trick if you’re a nervous peer or want to empty your bladder when it’s not quite full yet.

Drink a bunch of water (as in, as much as you can stomach or up to 32 oz or so) about an hour beforehand and you will really need to pee.

This is what is required when a pelvic ultrasound is performed so that you have a full bladder at first but also need to pee so that you can then be imaged with an empty bladder.

I agree with the others – stay hydrated and maybe drink coffee to give yourself a boost. But I have another suggestion which works for me but not for my husband so I have no idea if it’s unusual.

As long as I haven’t just very recently peed, I can make myself pee by tickling the top of my ass crack. So I sit on the toilet, touch that spot, and pee starts to trickle. Then it’s like as soon as it gets started, it’s easy to continue.

How often do you normally pee? Why not just drink a lot of water? Generally IME if I drink a lot of water I’ll urgently need to pee an hour later. Holding your pee for 8 hours sounds terrible to me.

The importance of coffee in this equation cannot be overstated. If you’re worried, try having a 12oz coffee plus lots of water an hour or two before your appointment. Don’t hold it in all day before the appt, you might hurt yourself. Just goose your waterworks with coffee and stay well hydrated before going in and you should be fine.

Also, doctors know about bashful bladders so just let them know you might be a minute. You may also be able to collect a sample at home if you discuss it with them first(don’t roll up to your doctor today with a cup of unasked-for pee). You’ve got options. Just when you’re in the moment, relax and let the coffee do the work.

Don’t take sips of water. Chug your water. Get like 24-36oz of water and start taking big gulps about 15 minutes before your appointment. Something about chugging down water vs sipping makes me want to urinate immediately. This is pretty common for me when I’m in the gym… there’s a point a lot of times where sipping on water just isn’t enough and I have this urge to gulp down a good cup’s worth of water… then about 10 minutes later I have to go urinate.

Go ahead and test it out today… seriously. Don’t sip your water just chug down two glasses of water and time it, within a half hour or so you should get that sensation to urinate.

If your bladder is ready but you’re having trouble going, try running the faucet or imagine a waterfall.

The couple of times I had to do this I was in a bathroom stall by myself, and I had to put the jar through a little hatch in the wall. There was one of those little liquid crystal fishtank thermometers on the jar, and I couldn’t flush the toilet, but beyond that nothing crazy. I don’t think you get actively meatgazed unless it’s the military or the test is for something really serious.

When you’re trying to pee, try working up some spit in your mouth like you’re going to spit a bunch of saliva out. Not a loogie from the throat / sinus area but plain spit from under your tongue. For me it seems like this is connected to the piss-releasing nerves and helps to let it flow.
